Bluefin Fish Sells for Record Bid of 3.2 million dollars at Tokyo Auction
A substantial bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the year.
The top offer for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the company of a well-known sushi chain, which operates outlets across the country and overseas.
"An inaugural tuna brings good luck," stated the business owner, a notable participant at the yearly first sale.
Dubbed the King of Tuna, this businessman is famous for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile new year auctions.
Bidding Shock and Record-Setting Precedent
Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to reporters that he was "taken aback at the final price," noting, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price soared before you knew it."
This latest purchase exceeds his own notable purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Even after previously remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now managed to shatter his personal record another time.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally characterized by exceptionally high prices. Last year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different sushi chain operator, which stated the fish would be featured at its restaurants throughout the country.
The high-energy activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a major event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Swift Service
The extremely valuable tuna was shortly thereafter sliced up for patrons at the bidder's sushi establishments soon after the auction concluded.
"I sense like I've commenced the year in a good way after tasting something so fortune-bringing as the year starts," shared one elated patron.
