Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Earn First Victories Following Player Arrests
Miami scored eighty-six first-half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat earned a crushing 146-114 victory over the Grizzlies in their first basketball match after guard Rozier was detained over suspected illegal gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was additionally detained as part of a broad federal investigation into sports betting. Both men deny the claims.
However, the Heat were not distracted as they scored eighty-six opening half scores to be ahead of Memphis by 39 at halftime, the largest halftime lead in the team's 37 year history.
Adebayo top-scored with 24 points and afterwards said Terry had the team's full backing.
"We support him. Full support," Bam stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Rozier is somebody who is important to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our locker room.
"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces this."
Portland also won their initial match after the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and leading the squad to a decisive 139-119 victory against the Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but our focus is on the game."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Recent Events
Addressing the arrests for the first time, league head Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."
The commissioner further said an league probe into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Charlotte Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.
"We investigated that situation and were open about it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.
"Therefore, we've been working with them since then. Naturally, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.
"Moreover two and a half years after, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Terry.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
