His defensive approach and recurring reactions on the playing surface had caused observers to question if his capacity to play at the top level was finished.

But the 29-year-old has altered his approach in the last few weeks, attempting to come to the net and play assertively, backed up by an enhanced serve.

He fought back from a break down in the opening set against the challenging Frenchman, securing 4 of the concluding five exchanges to gain the advantage.

Both players traded break points in the middle set before Moutet, attempting for his first professional victory, gained dominance to force a decider.

The opponent defended 4 initial opportunities in a close third set before Medvedev won the break to 15 to serve for the match.

Fittingly, he secured victory with a shot at the net, with his opponent failing to handle a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
