Thomas Tuchel Wants Bellingham's Aggression Provided The Three Lions' Ace Sets Aside Egotism Outside.
One snub proved sufficient. Another and it would have started to look spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is much too clever not to realize that claiming the World Cup trophy will likely need help from Jude Bellingham, although it is equally on the midfielder to fit into the tactical structures and player rankings required with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's welcoming fold.
Tuchel desires the player's competitive fire, his passion, but it is a matter of using it appropriately. Skill matters but the squad have learned the hard way that there is consequences when celebrity prevails. Still, a point has been made.
Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after not being selected of last month’s squad. He observed the national side book their place at the upcoming World Cup without him. He saw Morgan Rogers shine as a high-pressing No 10. He heard Tuchel mention appreciating the team's dynamism and values. Naturally, Bellingham has responded in winning fashion, netting important strikes for his club versus their rivals and the Italian side. He had to be picked; another omission would have put his tournament chances hanging by a thread.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham focused on pressuring the opposition rather than teammates. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is no advantage to starting a conflict with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period not playing has demonstrated that an international career is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, for his part, can now throw a protective shield around the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is willing to take tough decisions.
“No issue exists regarding him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel stated. “Jude displays that aggression. You need a sharp mentality to succeed at the top that he reached. We all need to help him and build a setting which he can use this edge towards opponents and for the objectives we are working towards as a team.”
The star dominated much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s final group games versus one opponent and the other. Any other news? Well, how about another talent? This is a further gifted playmaker who needs coaching. Foden has not played for England since March and has found it hard to perform well this year but the boss was impressed by the player after his display in his club's victory against the German side recently.
The question, however, is how to use the attacking talents at available. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be compelling reasons to pick Cole Palmer once he recovers from a fitness issue. Is selecting multiple creators to the World Cup be an overkill? The previous manager never found the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, cramping Harry Kane’s style in the process.
It seems unlikely the current manager making the same mistake if it disrupts the offensive structure. There is room for one No 10, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. He is selected as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will compete with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be central. The coach prefers him close to Kane. “It is illogical to tell Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but no spot exists in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Or the right wing?” he said. “Phil will play in the central attacking zone, through the center. I have this fantasy about him for a long time. I think it matches his abilities the most.”
Tuchel conceded there are times when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an national jersey. “One senses almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And a player like him who has obvious passion to play football, then obviously something is not right, whether it's his role, the setup, it's unclear.
“I think he is additionally so used to playing for his club in a certain structure, with a defined role. I think he benefits greatly from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defend?
The manager mentioned Bellingham making runs for tap-ins and the other drilling in goals from 18 yards. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, others, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his fine form for City at left-back. Interest is high.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in the selection. Interestingly, he hinted at deploying the playmaker as a false 9 against Serbia or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives if Kane be absent. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for testing tactics.
At the same time, it is also a moment to foster the understanding with his teammate going. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter assisting Kane to net in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to find the sole instance in many appearances for England when the duo combined for a score. Tuchel will be aware that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with one opponent and another at the Euros. The connection is missing.
“This is where at some point it becomes the duty of the players,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to be blunt. There is still a feeling of the player being on trial. He may not be guaranteed to begin against Serbia and Albania. The manager wants him committed but he will be observing him carefully. Leave self-importance outside. Doing so could turn a powerful England team into an more effective one.
